At N7 Dental we see many patients each week who are unhappy with their discoloured or stained teeth. They tell us how grey or dull looking teeth stop them smiling freely with friends, family and work colleagues. In some cases it even prevents them talking with confidence and effects their self-esteem and quality of life.

The good news is teeth whitening is one of the most common, affordable and effective cosmetic dental procedures available. Here’s a list of some of the most common questions we get from patients considering teeth whitening.

  1. I brush twice a day properly but still my teeth are discoloured or stained, why?

Teeth get discoloured or stained for many reasons, we’ve listed a few here:

  • High consumption of tea, coffee or red wine
  • Smoking
  • Ageing
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Improper brushing
  • Excessive fluoride or certain types of medicines
  1. Can everyone undergo teeth whitening?

Yes, everyone can be treated for teeth whitening.  The appropriate treatment can depend on factors such as; age, oral health condition and any past or present illness.  Only in some extreme cases, such as advanced gum disease, would a dentist advise against teeth whitening.

  1. Is teeth whitening painful?

In some cases where teeth are sensitive to peroxide, the patient may feel some slight pain or discomfort during the process or when consuming hot or cold foods. However, this discomfort tends to be short-lived and disappears after a couple of days.

  1. What is teeth whitening?

In simple terms, teeth whitening is a procedure to lighten your teeth by removing discolouration and stains. There are different options available to whiten your teeth:

At home bleaching

This is often suited to busy professionals who find it difficult to visit the dentist regularly. Our dentists will create a custom-made tray to fit perfectly over your teeth and will guide on how to use a teeth-whitening agent like peroxide with the trays over a period of a few weeks.the same and for what amount of time. After the initial visit you can whiten your teeth from the comfort of your own home.

Chair-side bleaching in N7 Dental Care

Our dentists start by thoroughly cleaning your teeth and removing any food particles that may have stuck between your teeth. Once this is done, the dentist will either apply a rubber shield or protective gel to protect your gums and then apply the bleach to the teeth. The bleach will break stains into small pieces that will make your teeth look brighter and lighter. Our in-house treatment works better and faster as the bleaching solution used is stronger.

Over the counter (OTC) bleaching products

Nowadays, various bleaching products like tooth pastes, whitening rinses or whitening strips are available online or over the counter. These are products tend not to work as well as the other options listed as they may remove stains but don’t whiten teeth. Please consult your dentist first before using such products.

You have options when it comes to whitening your teeth so why not ask one of our dentists to advise on what will work for you. We’ll do a detailed study of your dental health and let you know the most suitable treatment to you.
